, there was plenty of good stuff on display as the Braves picked up wins in both of their games today."As far as both results and execution go, it was a good day on two different fronts for the Braves as they won both of their split squad games in spring training action today. On the home front, the Braves showed us what could happen in a best-case scenario when it comes to the top of their lineup. While Josh Donaldson still has yet to make his spring training debut, Ozzie Albies took on the role of hitting second in the lineup. The third inning was when we got a glimpse of what could be as both Ronald Acuna Jr. and Albies hit singles to load up the bases after Andres Blanco got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. That prompted Freddie Freeman to come up to bat with the bases loaded and March 6 may as well have been April 6 because it’s clear that Freddie is ready for the season to begin. The face of the franchise took a pitch from Tyson Ross and sent it ricocheting off of the batter’s eye in center field for a grand slam that made it 4-0 Braves at that point. The interesting part is that Freddie has yet to hit a grand slam during regular season play, but I guess this is okay when it comes to whetting your appetite for what’s to come when the games actually count. Meanwhile, Ozzie Albies eventually exited the game in the fourth inning after getting hit in the lower leg with a pitch but it appears that he left the game as a precautionary measure rather than being in a significant amount of pain. The first three innings were especially encouraging if you take into account the performance from Touki Toussaint. He was especially in need of a bounce-back performance after he got knocked around in his previous outing. There were no such struggles four Touki today as he threw three scoreless innings and struck out four while only walking one. It was a huge turnaround from what we saw from him in his last appearance and you can safely say that he’s pitched himself back into competition for a rotation spot.Once Touki got his work in for the day, it was time for what’s likely going to be the big league bullpen to get some innings in. Arodys Vizcaino, Jesse Biddle, Jonny Venters, Dan Winkler and Shane Carle all made appearances in this one and the only one who gave up runs was Viz. JaCoby Jones led off the top of the fourth inning by hitting a dinger to put the Tigers on the board and after Vizcaino followed that up by surrendering a couple of singles and he exited the frame with two runners on and just one out. That’s when Biddle entered the game and that was also when Dustin Peterson immediately brought in the second run of the game with a single of his own. Jesse Biddle eventually got out of that jam with a double play but found himself in another jam in the next inning when he stayed in the game. After retiring the first two batters with no problems, he hit Pete Kozma and then gave up a single to JaCoby Jones before walking Christin Stewart to load the bases. Fortunately, Biddle induced a grounder to end the inning and he escaped his second and final mess of the day. The top half of the fifth frame ended in disappointment for the Tigers but the Braves ended their fifth inning feeling pretty good about themselves after they added four more runs to their tally. Contributions during this inning included a walk from Adam Duvall, a ground-rule double from Brian McCann and a walk from Tyler Flowers. The bullpen kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard for the rest of the game (including an appearance from Corbin Clouse, who has been making the best of his opportunities during this spring) and things ended with the Braves picking up an 8-2 win at their spring home. Meanwhile at Jupiter, prospects such as Cristian Pache, Drew Waters and Austin Riley were on display as the Braves took on the Marlins. The Braves won that game 4-0 and those three players all made contributions to the winning effort on the afternoon. Cristian Pache in particular had a good inning in the third, which is when he led off that frame with a single. He then proceeded to steal second base before coming home after Greyson Jenista got one to drop in the outfield. This was all after Pache led off the game with a double, so it’s safe to say that Pache had himself a productive day.Cristian Pache was replaced by Drew Waters, who went 1-for-2 with a strikeout during his time on the field today. Austin Riley also finished the day with a 1-for-2 performance Brock Holt Jersey
, but he also added a walk in there as well. As far as pitching was concerned, it was another solid effort from the Braves with Bryse Wilson’s performance being the standout effort of the day. Wilson matched Toussaint with by throwing three scoreless innings with one strikeout while only giving up one hit against the Marlins. Kyle Muller tossed two scoreless innings of his own and added two strikeouts into the mix as well. Wes Parsons matched that with two clean frames as and two strikeouts as well. After Tucker Davidson handled the eighth inning with no problem, Luke Jackson came on for the ninth and threw two strikeouts as well, including one that ended the game and clinched the shutout for the Braves. There was plenty of good stuff on display for the Braves on both fronts during this split squad day. If you’re the type who cares about results, then you’re obviously thrilled that the Braves won twice today. If the execution is what you’re after when it comes to spring training, then there’s plenty of reason to feel encouraged after today’s action. Simply put, this was a very good day for the Braves as they continue to get ready for the 2019 season. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Wieters made the most of his chance.Wieters drove in a three runs and stole a base for just the third time in six years, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-7 Thursday for a four-game sweep of the NL champions.Making his first start this season, the 32-year-old Wieters hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a two-run double in the fifth that put the Cardinals ahead 8-7. With runners at the corners in the fifth, Wieters stole second as Matt Carpenter struck out, his first steal since April 27, 2017, and just the ninth of his major league career.“Normally, I try to get one a year,” Wieters said with a smile.Wieters went to spring training with a minor league contract and earned a job as a backup to nine-time All-Star Yadier Molina. Wieters had just one previous plate appearance this season; he was hit by a pitch on April 1.St. Louis’ bullpen combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the series finale and allowed one run in the four games.“This whole series was a well-played series on our side,” Wieters said.” Today we had to do it a little differently coming from behind. The bullpen’s been amazing of just nailing it down for us.”Harrison Bader was hit by pitches with the bases loaded in both the second and fifth innings. He was the first player to force in runs twice in a game while getting hit since Toronto’s Reed Johnson on April 16, 2005, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.“Over the course of 162 games, every RBI matters http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey
,” Bader said. “Whether you walk or get a single, they all count. It came at a good time. If I’ve got to wear it for the club, I’d do it again.”He was part of a rare two-run wild pitch in the second inning by Walker Buehler. When the ball bounced toward the first base dugout and first baseman David Freese let catcher Rocky Gale chase after it, Jeff Gyorko scored from third and Bader from second.“Out of the hand, saw the ball in the dirt,” Bader said. “Obviously, I’ve got to watch the runner in front of me, but I knew it was kind of kicked away far enough. As I was rounding third base, I was just picking up the first baseman to see what he was doing. He really wasn’t going after it too hard, so I just took a chance and took an extra base.”José Martinez matched a career high with four hits, including an RBI double off Yimi García in a two-run sixth. St. Louis set a season high for runs and swept the Dodgers in a four-game series for the first time since July 15-18, 2010.“We just didn’t pitch well today,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Didn’t play well. I thought we swung the bats well, put ourselves in a position to win a baseball game, but didn’t play well defensively. This is the first game that I felt on the pitching side across the board, the defensive side, we just didn’t play well.”Freese and Buehler hit solo home runs in the second inning for Los Angeles, and Kiké Hernández homered to cap a four-run third.Giovanny Gallegos (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance of the season for the Cardinals to win in relief of Michael Wacha, who allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. It was the first Major League win for Gallegos in 23 appearances.Pedro Báez (0-1) gave up four runs — three earned — and four hits in one inning.Trailing 7-4 David Price Jersey
